On 2nd October 2018 some of the DARA Advanced students joined those from the related Big Data projects in Africa and Colombia for the first Fanaroff Lecture held at the Imperial War Museum North in Manchester. The lecture was given by Dr Rob Adam the director of the Square Kilometre Array South Africa, with an introduction from the former director Dr Bernie Fanaroff, after whom this new annual series is named. Students heard about Dr Adam's career in science, leadership and politics and how these intersected in the transition to the new democratic South Africa.
